I joined this project about a month after it had started, and wrote a hardware accelerated renderer using Direct3D (version 8), as a user-selectable alternative to the existing software renderer. I later rewrote the hardware-accelerated renderer using version 7 of the Direct3D API, to give increased compatibility with older video cards such as 3dfx Voodoo.
